Vijay fans love him to watch in action movies, but after a long time Vijay has choose the subject that has more family elements than just regular commercial mass masala scenes. Though this genre feels fresh for Vijay, this kind of stories were earlier made in Telugu by big stars already. Movie trailer itself has reminded many movies in the past like ‘Gowtham SSC’, ‘Srimanthudu’ and few other movies in Telugu.
Movie starts with main characters introduction followed by few family scenes that engages the audience and later turns boring with routine scenes that were earlier seen in many movies. Love track between Vijay and Rashmika are very poorly written that lacks interest. Few fight sequences in the first half will entertain Vijay fans. Second half has nothing special that could entertain audience except few dialogues and elevation scenes that gives high to Vijay fans. Climax will definitely disappoint.
Irrespective of the story, Vijay tries to entertain audience with his body language and dialogues in many movies. But the role offered to Vijay in this movie has no specialty and he looks very artificial in emotional scenes. Rashmika Mandanna role is limited and her performance can be ignored for her poor expressions. Yogi Babu entertained with his comedy timing and he is one of the major reliefs in the movie. Jayasudha have done these kind of roles earlier and she was good as always. Prakash Raj got very routine role and he has nothing new to do. Sarathkumar, Shaam, Srikanth did their roles well. All other actors did their part as required for the story.
Varisu movie has great production values, but VFX could have been better if taken care. Songs composed by Thaman are one of the major highlights in the movie and his background score for few scenes will surely erupt the emotions in Vijay fans. Karthik Palani is okay with his camera. Movie could have been trimmed a little to make it look crisp.
Vamshi Paidipally, who entertained audience with ‘Maharshi’ failed completely this time. From the story selection to making, everything disappoints in Varisu.
Overall, Varisu might entertain Vijay fans in Tamil and will surely be disappointing in Telugu states. If you are a hardcore fan of Vijay, you can watch this movie in theatres this Pongal weekend.
