Yes, it is Christmas, and time to add the festive films to the ‘must-watch’ list so we can binge on them during the holidays. This year, OTT platforms have already started releasing many films well ahead of the holidays. With many popular faces and a long list of films to choose from, this Christmas is bound to keep you and your families busy in front of the TV screens.

Spirited – Apple TV+

Directed and co-written by Sean Anders, Spirited is a movie based on Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol. The makers have attempted retelling the story for a newer audience by offering various adaptations. The plot revolves around the Ghost of Christmas Present, who is nearing retirement and will soon return to our planet, setting eyes on a man who he wishes helped him come to terms with his own past. The official plot of the film reads, “A musical version of Charles Dickens’s story of a miserly misanthrope who is taken on a magical journey.”

The Guardians of the Galaxy: Holiday Special – Disney+ Hotstar

In this special version of ‘The Guardians of the Galaxy,’ Knowhere has been purchased from the Collector and taken in Cosmo the Spacedog as a new member. Quill is depressed about losing Gamora, and since Christmas festivities are nearing, Guardians are told the childhood story of how Yondu ruined Christmas for Peter Quill. They join hands to find a perfect Christmas present for Quill, eventually deciding to come to earth to find Kevin Bacon, Quill’s childhood hero. What follows is how Star-Lord, Drax, Rocket, Mantis, and Groot engage in spirited shenanigans in this original special.

Scrooge: Christmas Carol – Netflix

Jointly written by Leslie Bricusse and Stephen Donnelly, Scrooge: A Christmas Carol is a supernatural, time-travelling presented this time as a musical adaptation of a Christmas story by Charles Dickens, A Christmas Carol. The plot, as shared on Netflix, says, “On a cold Christmas Eve, selfish miser Ebenezer Scrooge has one night left to face his past — and change the future — before time runs out.”

Falling for Christmas – Netflix

Sierra Belmont is a spoilt hotel heiress and is newly appointed at the senior level in ‘Atmosphere,’ a luxury ski resort owned by her father. She heads to the mountaintop when her father is away and meets with an unfortunate incident while her boyfriend proposes. She eventually falls from the top of the mountain and drops unconscious. Jake Russell, who earlier pitched his business to her father, takes her to a hospital where the doctors inform her about Sierra being diagnosed with amnesia and losing her memory. What follows in Falling for Christmas are events where he and the hospital staff try to verify her identity.

Christmas with You – Netflix

After burnout from the career, a pop star escapes from the city to a small town with the hope of finding inspiration and also taking a chance to find love. The premise on Netflix says, “Seeking inspiration for a hit holiday song, a pop star grants a young fan’s Christmas wish to meet her — and finds a shot at true love along the way.”

The Noel Diary – Netflix

A diary filled with the secrets to the past falls in the hands of a best-selling author who returns home to his mother’s estate to celebrate Christmas. While he is clearing his childhood home, he meets a woman who is also searching for her birth mother. What secrets does this old diary unlock, and does it include their pasts and connect hearts becomes the crux of The Noel Diary.

Something from Tiffany’s – Amazon Prime Video

Written by Tamara Chestna and directed by Daryl Wein, Something from Tiffany’s is based on Melissa Hill’s novel of the same name. The rom-com revolves around a woman who receives an engagement ring by mistake. As she sets on a mission to return the ring, destiny takes her to the person she’s meant to be with. What follows, in Something from Tiffany’s, is a beautiful story of how two people bond and connect in what was meant to be a destined meet. The official premise of the film, as on the OTT platform, reads, “Life – like love – is full of surprises and unexpected gifts. In the holiday romance Something From Tiffany’s, one woman’s life is forever changed by an engagement ring meant for someone else.”

Presented as an Amazon Original, written and created by Tom Parry, Your Christmas or Mine is about a young couple, Hayley and James, who are in love. In an attempt to surprise each other, they take a decision to take a train, completely unaware of either’s situation. They swapped trains hoping it would be a pleasant surprise, only to pass each other at the station, where they just swapped Christmases.

Christmas Full of Grace – Netflix

The Spanish rom-com written by Carol Garcia and directed by Pedro Paes is about Carlinhos, who catches his partner cheating. He meets Graça, a lively person, and takes her as the one who he wishes the family to meet during Christmas, only to manage the situation and save his reputation during the festivities.

I Hate Christmas – Netflix

Christmas is one occasion when everyone’s family expects the person to introduce their supposed partner. Gianna, once again, does not have anyone; and every Christmas has become the same for her, especially due to this pressure. The same story of ‘and your loved one?’ is now bothering her, and to avoid the awkward questions related to her love life, Gianna has 25 days to come up with a plan and find a boy who can accompany her for the Christmas dinner. Released as a web series, the official plot reads, “After lying to her family about having a boyfriend, a single nurse begins a desperate search to find a partner by Christmas — which is in 24 days.”

The Santa Clauses – Disney+ Hotstar

Created by Jack Burditt, the comedy miniseries, Santa Clauses, revolves around Scott Calvin, who is about to celebrate his 65th birthday. He has been the beloved Santa all his life and now realises that he cannot remain the same, and hence embarks on a journey to find a suitable replacement Santa. He and his family set off on a journey to experience living the adventurous life in the south of the pole.

A Storm for Christmas – Netflix

Unlike other rom-coms or romantic films, A Storm for Christmas is a story of travellers and families who get trapped at an airport during Christmas. A group of people arrive at Oslo airport and are stuck due to the extreme weather. This includes some who have come to welcome their loved ones, some who plan to fly home and some who plan trips for a get-away Christmas. Destined to be in one place, they are forced to spend the festivities together.
